He couldn’t be certain, but Beo felt as if Emon Sanhaya had been watching him since he came into the workspace.

Emon had greeted Beo with plenty of friendliness—he had an infectious smile and sparkling brown eyes so dark the light reflecting off his irises looked like starlight—but he had not said much, and he showed Beo his darkroom and left him to do his work.

Beo worked through the morning and into the early afternoon, finally finishing up the developing so the prints could dry on their line. He emerged from the darkroom with a strange sense of warring familiarity and oddity. The smells were the same, but the equipment set up just slightly different. The distance from one item to another, from the rinse basin to the chemicals, the tables to the drying line. Beo didn’t miss his flat. Not really. But he did miss his darkroom.

Emon Sanhaya’s workspace was an artist’s dream. His flat had been remodelled to remove almost every wall; only the washroom and the darkroom had escaped. It gave Beo a tickle of precarious intimacy, to move about someone’s private space. Sanhaya’s bed was unmade, and as Beo ducked under the heavy curtain at the darkroom door, Emon was pouring soup into a bowl. A second bowl, Beo noticed.

“I’m very sorry,” said Beo. “I didn’t realise you were expecting company. “I’m finished, but I’ll need to come back later and fetch the prints once they’re dry.”

“Please, sit.” Emon set the second bowl down on the table next to the first. His hair was straight and fell to his collar bones, all one even length like a cascade of black water. “That’s for you. I could hear you finishing up and thought you might be hungry.”

“That’s very kind of you.” Beo had been about to shoulder his camera bag to leave, but now he stood with it in one hand, shifting the weight of it somewhat awkwardly. He hung it over the back of a chair and sat opposite Emon at the table.

“I must confess, I’m very happy to have gotten the chance to meet you,” said Emon.

“I beg your pardon?” The soup in front of Beo smelled hearty and spicy, like chile sausage and smoked peppers. He took a bite.

“I’ve seen your work before. When Tarn told me you were getting the open space at the Galleria, I was overjoyed to hear it.”

Beo shifted in his seat. “Thank you. I’ve only ever done smaller exhibitions before.”

“I know. I’ve been to a few of your shows around the city.”

A pepper caught in Beo’s tonsil. He coughed, then cleared his throat. “You seem to have me at a bit of a disadvantage.”

“Hardly, though I can try if you’d like.”

A jolt went through Beo, and this time when he swallowed, it had nothing to do with stray peppers. “Erm.”

“I’m sorry. That was a bit forward of me.” Emon gave Beo that same infectious smile, and Beo couldn’t help but smile back.

“No need to apologise. I’m flattered; I simply don’t know anything at all about you other than that you keep your darkroom in enviable order.
